Best Travel Apps to Make Your Life Easier on the Road

iphone appsMany people say smartphones like the IPhone and Android have changed how we live our lives. Smartphones put the Internet in the palm of our hands and allow us to be truly mobile. The best thing about owning a smartphone is simply the apps. There are millions of apps out there and new ones coming on the market each day. One of the industries where apps have made a significant difference is travel. The ability to use an app on the go while traveling to obtain the information you need quickly is nothing short of priceless. Traveling can be very stressful if you don’t do it very often and it takes you out of your comfort zone. The unfamiliarity of a new city, hotel, or airport can cause stress and make you nervous. Luckily there are apps to assist you with all of this, set you at ease, and make your travel experience a memorable one. I listed some of the best travel apps that are available for both iPhone and Android.

Best Travel Apps

Skype – Skype is an app that allows you to do free face to face video calls. No more sending numerous pictures back and forth or saying “I wish you could see the view from my hotel room”. Now, with Skype you can video chat with a loved one, your kids, or a co-worker while traveling. This app is nothing short of fantastic and the uses are endless. For iPhone fanatics, there is an app called FaceTime which allows two people with iPhones to video chat just like Skype. FaceTime is only available for iPhone while Skype is also available for both iPhone and Android.

iCarPark – Have you ever had a great vacation only to come back and wander around the airport parking lot for a half hour thinking someone stole your car? I know I have and I will never have to do that again. iCarPark helps you navigate back to your car using a easy to read map and also allows you to take notes with the level, section, spot, and lot of your car.  This app won’t save you money, but it will save you time which is just as valuable. iCarPark is only available for the iPhone.

Kayak – Kayak is the #1 downloaded travel app with over 25 million downloads to date. The reason why is it allows you to compare all the top travel sites at once. To get the best deal, you don’t have to go to Expedia, then Priceline, then the airline’s website and retype all the same information. You input the information once and get the pricing information from all sites. This is hands down one of the best travel apps for IPhone and Android.

OpenTable – Finding somewhere to eat while out of town was a difficult task, until now. OpenTable allows you to search restaurants close to you, your hotel, or event and provides real-time table availability for reservations. They add in menus and reviews of the restaurants to make this app a must have!

Gas Buddy – Gas buddy is a pretty straightforward app. It allows you to locate gas stations near you and find the best prices. If you’re on a road trip or out of town, this app is for you. Why pay more for gas if you don’t have to?

Google Translate – Anytime you travel, the possibility of coming across a communication issue due to language barrier is very likely. This was a significant problem until the Google Translate app. This app allows you to convert text-to-speech, translate languages, and will give you dictionary results. With over 50 languages supported now, Google Translate will allow you to successfully communicate and eliminate the language barrier while traveling. Google Translate is available for both the iPhone and Android, but I think this is one of the best Android travel apps because all the features are available unlike the iPhone app. Being able to communicate is one of the most important aspects of travel.

Hotel Tonight – Ever need a hotel room at the last minute at a great price? If so, this is the app for you. Hotel Tonight allows you to book a last minute deal on an unsold hotel room. From canceled flights to family emergencies, you just don’t know what will happen next. This app allows you to get a deal on a hotel no matter when you need to book the room.

Yelp -You never know what you will need when you travel. Many people think of a last minute hotel or flight, but what if you needed to get your car repaired in a hurry while out of town? What if you woke up with tooth pain that just could not wait until you got home? Yelp can help. I think Yelp says it best when they say” People use Yelp to search for everything from the city’s tastiest burger to the most renowned cardiologist”. You don’t know who or what you will need next and when you’re out of town this app is great to have in your pocket.

iFlyPro – Unfamiliar airports can be stressful. From locating the correct terminal to checking your flights status, being prepared can be difficult if you have never been there before. iFlyPro changes all of that. This app gives you a wealth of information on over 700 airports including flight status, parking, restrooms, food, layover ideas, and much more. If you’re traveling soon, download this app, you will not be disappointed.

Wherever you go…Grab the App! – If you’re going to the Kentucky Derby or the Masters Golf tournament for the weekend, grab their app! Most events now have their own personalized app with all the information you need to make your trip a memorable success. Personalized event apps are fantastic because they are focused on that specific event or weekend so you get all the up to date information on times, parking, news, and much more.

Apps are not only for fun, they can make life easier and make us much more efficient. Some of the apps on this list will save you money, but others will save you time and frustration which is just as valuable. Traveling can be stressful and the most important thing to remember while traveling is to know how to obtain the proper information you need. These are some of the best travel apps on the market and are a great starting point for any trip. When planning a trip you never know what you might run into, but with your smartphone, the internet, and this list of the best travel apps you will be able make any trip a success.
