Blockbuster Total Access Review

email

I think one of the greatest forms of entertainment for a society that’s currently interested in slowing spending and getting out of debt is movie rentals.  A good movie can be watched at home cheap and conveniently these days.  Yes, you can have a date at home and save tons of money.

That’s why I thought it would be good to write a post about a service that has existed in our family entertainment budget category for quite some time now.  The Blockbuster Total Access program has served us well.  Here are some of the things I like about it –

Blockbuster Total Access

Easy to use

The convenience aspect of the plan is nice.  Here’s how it works:  I log into my account at blockbuster.com, review the movie selections and add the movies I want to my queue with a click of a button.  A couple of days later my movies arrive in the mail.  Over all, I like clicking the mouse versus making a trip to the local store.

Affordable

It’s affordable in price.  There are plans available for 1 DVD, 2 DVDs or 3 DVDs at a time.  We watch a moderate amount of movies (1-2 per week).  We use the 2 DVD option which is only $13.99. You can pay a little more and have an in-store exchange option that allows you to take a move back to a local store if you don’t want to wait to receive a new movie in the mail.

No late fees

There are no late fees.  I consider us pretty responsible people, but we’ve had our fair share of late fee experiences in the past.  Anyway, Blockbuster Total Access solved this problem for us.  Now the most I need to worry about is putting my movies back in the mail so we can make sure we get our money worth in rentals each month.

Tips for using Blockbuster Total Access

While I’m a customer and am recommending Blockbuster Total Access, I’ll also mention a few things to watch out for that can impede positive experience.

Keep your movie queue filled

We get a little bit lazy at times and don’t keep our queue filled.  Once the movies are returned via mail we’ll notice a few days later no movies are showing up.  Not a big deal, but you don’t want to pay money and not receive any movies, so keep your queue filled.

Get the right plan

Get the right plan for the right amount of movies, especially if you have children around the house.  Renting a few movies for kids is fun too, but make sure you choose a plan that allows you to have movies too!

As I mentioned, we’re on the two movie plan.  There have been a few weekends I was looking forward to my movie and realized we had two children movies.  Anyway, it’s easily solved with a trip up to the local Blockbuster for a movie exchange, but it’s not as convenient as getting movies in the mail.

Final Thoughts

I know there are some other movie options available today such as Red Box and Netflix.  I haven’t used these services and know they can provide inexpensive options as well.  However, I don’t see the need to change something that seems to be working for us.

I just opened a subscription for Blockbuster’s Total Access Premium service. Right now they are offering the first 30 days for free, so I made sure to take advantage of this. I started to do GameFly first, even though they claimed the first month is free my card was declined for insufficient funds despite the fact there was enough funds on the card to cover the “pre-authorization” charge that many vendors subtract from the account initially then refund to ensure it is a valid credit card.

I believe Blockbuster’s service is the way to go. Blockbuster has been around for many years and has a reputation to protect, and they are very quick to ship your product out. I opened my account and put Gears of War 3 in my queue at around mid-night on Tuesday, and 10am that same morning when I woke up my disk had already been shipped out with an estimated delivery time of 3 days (eg: scheduled to be here on Friday). Their prices are also cheap. Gears of War 3 right now is going for $42 and some change through them. The only place it’s cheaper is Gamestop, and the only reason is because they just have a special promo going right now for Gears of War 3.

You really can’t beat obtaining your movies, games, etc this way during these times. It’s awfully rough to pay $60 for a new release to only do 1-2 playthroughs then put it on the shelves to collect dust for the next 6 months. Very seldomly does someone play a game for more than 6 months (unless it’s an amazing multiplayer game), and it’s almost like you’re making small payments for the game instead of dropping $60 at once. Rent a game, keep it for 6 months, then send it back. This way you can literally play as many games as you want for an extremely low price of only $9.99 a month.
