I’m pleased to welcome Jocelin Boutet as a new staff writer to One Money Design! Jocelin joins the team with a strong passion for helping people with their personal finances and teaching God’s financial principles. You’ll read in this interview post how Jocelin helps people in the area of money management each day as the Crown Financial Ministry Money Map Coach Manager.
I’m very excited to have her write for One Money Design. I believe she will offer readers a lot of Biblical insight and practical tips based on her personal experiences and in her ministry with Crown. Stay tuned as Jocelin’s first post will be tomorrow.
What is the most meaningful Biblical financial principle to you?
I think for me it has been the verse of “Owe no man anything.” I have seen my parents get out of debt and the Lord bless them tremendously, yet when they were in debt, the struggles and pain (both financially and emotionally) were great. It has taught me from a young age that I do not want to have debt of which I have none.
Do you have a favorite practical financial tip?
Live on a budget and live below your means. If you know what you spend and where you can then have the information you need to make wise financial decisions. The Bible tells us to know the condition of our flocks (aka our bank account), so by living on a budget, I know that information. Also, while it sounds way too simple “live on less than you make,” that is the number one mistake most Americans make.
Why do you think people should be interested in personal finance?
We deal with money each and every day. The Bible has over 2,350 verses on money. That was the number one topic our Lord taught on. If He thought it was that important, so should I!
Do you have a personal money management learning experience you would be willing to share?
Sure. My parents began teaching me at a young age how to wisely manage money. By them involving me in their finances, I began to learn responsibility as well as how to make wise decisions. I can remember by seven years old helping my dad write his business checks. I was almost totally on my own by the age of 11 doing his business billing and incoming receipts for his six digit income architectural business. That early training has enabled me to have the building blocks I needed to have the basic understanding of finances. They also focused on the fact that while we are spiritual beings, we need to live that out in practical ways and encouraged me to continue to grow in that area by reading books such as Free and Clear by Howard Dayton and using the Money Map by Crown Financial Ministries.
Your the Money Map Coach manager at Crown. Can you tell us a little bit about your role and something about Money Map Coaching?
It is my privilege to serve as the Money Map Coach Manager at Crown. I’ve been on staff for 3 ½ years now, and my role is to provide training standards, continuing education, troubleshooting, and encouragement to the Money Map Coaches both in-person and online. My days are very varied which I enjoy, but my focus is to continue to grow and encourage this key part of the overall ministry of Crown. Our Money Map Coaches provide budget coaching and Biblical financial training. Each coach works with individuals through the process of how to budget and repay debt as well as what God has to say about finances and why He considers that a very key part of our lives. You can also hear more about what I do on this recent MoneyLife radio program http://www.crown.org/media/relatedcontent/080310.aspx.
I think you know I have a big heart for Crown. Can you share something of interest about the ministry for our readers? Perhaps something readers might be interested in checking out over at Crown.org?
Yes, and that’s one passion we both share! I think one of the items that many people miss is that Crown has a very large FREE library full of articles as well as a whole toolbox of calculators which can be found at www.crown.org/library and www.crown.org/tools. Most people are amazed at what they find there. And of our course, I can’t forget my favorite parts of the ministry – Coaching (www.crown.org/coaches) and the Radio Program, MoneyLife (www.crown.org/media).
