Suz, leasing is always more expensive in the long run. Keep in mind, you have monthly payments indefinitely whereas buying a good used car can be paid off and you can the save money. I would seek the advice of an accountant regarding the deduction.

I have a tax related question: I am self employed and have a 10 year old car which I'm preparing to replace. Does it make sense to lease because I can deduct the cost as an expense?

I have a son in college and I need to replace a car that was totaled. No gap insurance so I owe more than I got. Plus I need to buy a car. I want something fuel efficient and reliable. Not a cheap combination. It looks like I can lease a 2012 hyundai Accent (40 mpg highway) that has a great warranty for less than buying a used civic hybrid or prius that would have 100K miles on it (and no warrenty) to be close to the same monthly payment. Did I say I have a son in college? It seems like a great deal to me at this time...

As far as i am concerned i will go for buying a car instead of leasing it.I would take the pain of paying once instead of paying on monthly installment as the situation get worse in case i lose a job or find myself in financial difficulty. So paying once is much better and less costly in the long run.

I plan to purchase my next vehicle used with cash. Hopefully that is several years down the line as I'm hoping to get some more miles out of my current vehicle.

Leasing has a way of recognizing that car expenses are a never ending issue. That's the utlimate reality of car ownership!

But I think Clark Howard has a good take on leases. He said the basic problem with leases is that you never really know what you're getting into. It does seem as if the basic terms of a lease invite gotcha provisions.

I'm in the used car camp too! The car depreciates like, 35% after you drive it off the lot anyways.

I think some people like leasing cars here in Canada because you can write off the entire monthly expense if you own your own business and use the car.

I cannot imagine leasing a car. I buy them new put 150K on them and sell them. I figure it costs me less than seven cents a mile to drive a car plus gas and insurance. If I leased I don’t even want to think about how much it would cost.Yes I do get very good pricing on new cars and yes I fix them myself.
