The Great Recovery: Dave Ramsey Calls People to Manage Money God’s Way!

I just finished watching Dave Ramsey’s The Great Recovery kick – off event and am excited about this new movement. It could be the biggest call for stewardship and managing money according to Biblical principles our country has ever seen.

The Great Recovery is a movement to change our country and economy one person at a time. Dave says we can’t depend on the government to fix our problems and as Christians our hope should be in God.  He tells people God’s principles for managing money work.    The Great Recovery movement starts with you and learning and applying God’s principles of stewardship to your life.

The Great RecoveryHe questions what would happen if people started following God’s way for managing money.  People would saved more, give more, get out of debt, etc.  Their lives would change.  What would happen if communities did the same?  Communities and cities would change. What would happen if the movement spread throughout our country?  Our economy would change!  The change starts with you and me and how we manage God’s money as faithful stewards.

Dave is asking people to join the movement and share it with others in conversations, Facebook, Twitter, etc.   Here is the commitment-

This great nation can recover. I believe it will happen from the bottom up, one family at a time. I commit to make sure my family is equipped to do our part by educating ourselves on God’s way of handling money, living responsibly, saving for the future and giving to others.

I’m looking forward to my continued work here at One Money Design of educating people about stewardship and managing money God’s way.  I’ll also continue work as a Crown Money Map Coach to help people learn Biblical principles and practical tips for managing money.  Although I haven’t done this much lately, I’ve recently felt God asking me to recommit to this work.  Finally, I’m excited for my wife and I to refocus our efforts at home on God and managing wisely the resources in which he’s blessed us.

I knew Dave Ramsey was a Christian, but I I’ve never heard him talk so openly about managing money God’s way.  In fact, I feel like God was speaking through him during this kick – off event.  I believe he is listening closely to what God is telling him he needs to do in starting this movement for people to find financial peace through God’s financial principles and to ultimately refocus our attention on God as our source for hope.

I encourage you to watch the The Great Recovery kick – off event and join the movement!

Yes, the economy would change. With the decline in spending, layoffs and business closures would increase.

Terry, I agree. I wish Dave was a little more open with that reality. I agree that there is hope in Christ. I agree things will be more balanced and sustainable if we all worked our finances God’s way. However, the path towards recovery will be very painful for many in America. When people, doing everything right, get laid off, what is the Church’s answer? “Well you should have been working your finances God’s way.” That’s like telling Job, since you have troubles you must have done something wrong.

The system has to work itself out of $13 trillion of consumer debt. That is a huge drain. Like in any family, the credit card shopping spree is fun while your on the ride, but when the bill comes due many things change, usually painfully for that family.

If Dave feels this is a critical time, than I wish he would have talked about how we are going to respond to those who are hurting and are victims of the system cleansing itself of debt. I think that is going to make the Church flex just as much. When their fellow brother/sister is laid off, who will step in and prepare meals, teach new job skills, and watch their kids while the parents go to job interviews? The world or the Church?

If one wants America to recover without government support than I think a sales presentation for FPU should be coupled with a stronger study focused on compassion and generosity. That way the Church can start getting prepared to take on all these hurting people in a meaningful way, besides “go and I will pray for you”.

I appreciate Dave’s influence and ability to draw resources to this issue. It is a very important issue that needs more funding so that more people can understand it and get involved. But they also need to understand the situation we are in nationally and locally and the road he is really asking people to take.

Dave’s message was basically, Manage your money like God says and our nation will recover. True. Eventually.

Dave’s message felt like Joel Osteen meets personal finances. Large on positive thinking, small on the details.

      Respectfully,
      Eric

Thanks for the comments. As a Christian, the bottom line for me is Dave is openly steering people in the direction of stewardship and managing money God’s way. I believe only good things can come from that from all levels: individual, family, community, government, etc.

Managing money better may result in new opportunities for people, God can do amazing things. Obviously, I’m strong in my faith and excited about the movement.

I also think this was a kick – off event to build awareness and excitement…more details to follow (I hope). My take on this is that the church’s need to respond to people and offer programs to help people overcome challenges with debt, stress and financial suffering. As individuals are educated they should also have an opportunity to help others…perhaps in sharing their experience, coaching, teaching and setting good examples.

Let’s see what the months to come will bring. I feel like we’re doing some of this service here at OMD for people, but we can do better!

A Lot of negativity in the comments already. Perhaps they should watch the video a second time.

I think it’s fantastic what Dave is doing. If people would handle their money God’s way they would be prepared for layoffs and tough times.

He’s addressing the biggest problem for people who get laid off, which is hopelessness. Even people that haven’t been affected by this recession sound hopeless, it’s a sad epidemic that’s clouding this country.

If churches handled money God’s way and taught their congregation to do the same their income from tithes would be better, allowing them to take care of more people. Allowing them to witness to more people. When people are hurting and the church steps in to help, they are going to listen to what you have to say.

Is it an instant fix? No. I didn’t hear him say that. When my family got rid of our debt it took us four years of doing without and working hard. We cut satellite, fast food, vacations, and cut our internet speed. Everyone felt it. But here we are on the other side happier, better positioned, and able to help those in need.

As for a lack of detail. Handle money God’s way – that was the detail. He was promoting Christian financial programs, he mentioned several so it wouldn’t have made sense for him to lay out his own My Total Money Makeover plan.

The changes in economy someone else mentioned wouldn’t be noticeable. Firstly, it isn’t like the entire country would buy in on day one. Secondly, anyone that is already on the plan would have no change in spending, my family has finished that portion of our race, so our spending is back up – actually without house/car/computer/credit card/bowflex payments we get to spend more while still staying within our means. Lastly, as people staggeringly (?) completed their journey out of debt spending would increase.

Here’s hoping this country (and some commenters who will remain nameless) get a good dose of hope. ;)

If not, I think Dave said it best when he said “I like the way I get people out of debt better than the way you don’t”.

Have hope! and a great day,

    -Scott
