I came across a Crown Devotional this week that asks the simple question of who is in control of your spending. As you search around the web for spending tips most articles are written from the position of handling matters yourself. Tips include staying out of shopping malls, avoiding store ads and magazines, and even managing what you watch on TV. You’ll also find some of these tips right here within the OMD archives.
But this devotion clearly states we should put spending under God’s control. As faithful financial stewards we shouldn’t be trying to manage our spending habits without seeking God. This is great advice and certainly doesn’t have to be limited to the area of Christian finance. We should seek God in all areas and decisions for our lives.
Put all spending under God’s control. With God’s guidance, any bad habit can be broken.
“For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.” (1 Timothy 6:10 NASB).
So, rather than provide a few tips on how you can control your spending, I tried to think of some ways in which you can seek God’s guidance and break some of those nasty spending habits.
- Seek God in prayer. If you’re having problems with spending turn to the Lord everyday in prayer and ask him to change your heart and protect you against decisions that might hurt you or your family.
- Seek God’s word. As we learn in 1 Timothy, God tells us the love of money is the root of all evil. Love is a feeling or emotion and so God’s word can teach us how to use the resource of money wise.
- Finally, you can seek other Christians with a Biblical financial perspective for help. Why not ask a church leader to help provide you some financial guidance or lead you to the right resources. You can certainly visit Crown Financial Ministries which has a number of awesome resources to manage money and spending from God’s perspective.
What ideas do you have for seeking God’s guidance in your spending?
